Lasix is the brand name product for a loop diuretic medication called Furosemide. It is considered prescription medicine, which means that it can only be ordered and used if recommended by your healthcare provider. The product helps eliminate excess liquid from the body and can be used to treat edema caused by congestive heart failure, scarring of the liver, or renal disease.
Lasix only comes in the form of tablets, of various strengths (20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg), that must be taken by mouth. The tablets are white, oval, and have the name “Lasix” on one side. Depending on their strength, they may be sold in bottles of 100, 500 or 1000 tablets.
The active ingredient in Lasix is Furosemide, a substance that is used to treat fluid build-up in the body as a result of heart disease, renal or liver disease. In effect, it can alleviate shortness of breath and the swelling of the hands, legs, and abdomen, as a result of fluid build-up.
It is important to mention that Lasix, as well as other products that contain high quantities of Furosemide, may affect an individual's blood sugar and potassium levels.
Furthermore, the product should not be used by individuals who are experiencing a severe degradation of the kidneys or have a condition that limits their ability to physically eliminate urine.
As a result, it is important to only take Lasix at the doctor’s indication and to inform him if you are suffering from gout, lupus, or kidney failure.
Lasix may cause mild as well as severe side-effects. If you experience the latter, immediately stop the treatment and contact your healthcare provider. It is also important to ensure that you are not allergic to Furosemide before starting the treatment. Lasix contains high quantities of the active ingredient and taking the medicine can be fatal to those who are allergic.
